I was listening to a guided meditation by Dawson Church. The instructions of his Eco-meditation were to open up my crown and allow the love of the universe to pour in and activate all of my energy centers, but especially the heart. Then I was guided to expand the energy of my heart to send love and compassion to ALL THE ATOMS IN THE UNIVERSE! I thought, that’s a bit “over the top,” and I exclaimed to myself, “What!?! I can’t do that!”… but then I actually did! As I felt my heart radiating out to touch every atom in the universe, an old memory stirred in me.
I was in 4th or 5th grade in a science class and we were learning about the atom. The teacher showed us a diagram that was a map of an atom, that looked just like a map of the solar system, with a sun-like nucleus at the center and electrons like planets circling it. I was filled with wonder, and I had a crazy thought. I said to myself, “Oh wow, that’s where God has been hiding. God is shining out from the center of every atom.” It made so much more sense to me than a concept of God as some faraway Being up in the sky.
As I return to that memory, it makes more and more sense. The God-light that is shining out from the center of every atom goes through a process of becoming dense. Spirit becoming matter. The infinite light taking on a finite form. This whole world is a kind of disguise, hiding the Divine Mystery.
And then the challenge becomes, Can I address that Mystery? Can I send love and compassion to every atom in the universe? When I do, that love becomes reciprocal; I become the Beloved of every atom in the universe, and God-at-the-center-of every-atom is unmasked.
I knew this when I was 10 years old, but I kept forgetting; I kept being fooled by God who is hiding right here and everywhere.
